AROPS Conference 2019 – Navigating Change: The Future of Alumni Associations

ToucanTech were delighted to sponsor the 2019 annual AROPS Conference, held at the impressive Magdalen College School in sunny Oxford on Saturday 11th May.

Having recently partnered with AROPS to launch an active and engaging online members network we were excited to show off their new membership website on the ToucanTech platform and it was fantastic to see people signing up! It was great to speak to some of our lovely customers and meet some new faces at our colourful stand.

About 80 representatives – many proudly donning their school association blazers – gathered to share ideas and discuss the theme of Navigating Change: The Future of Alumni Associations.

The day was packed with experienced and passionate speakers who discussed topics ranging from the role of alumni societies to how to engage and manage the changing world of alumni relations. There certainly was something for everyone and we were very glad to have sat in on Jim Lewis’ session on Alumni Relations: Locate, Engage, Advance.

Jim’s obvious passion for alumni relations combined with his own tips and tricks provided much inspiration for attendees. Main takeaways were:

-Identify several members of each year group who can act as ambassadors to their peers and share events, spread information and encourage others to get involved.

-Think outside the box (or the school!) and engage with the local community to make connections and discover opportunities for current and former pupils.

-The most important conversations often occur in person! Jim clearly puts a lot of effort into meeting up with alumni and thanking them the support they provide.

Jim concluded by highlighting that the goal of alumni relations is to increase participation and remember to always listen to what alumni want but strive to give them something they didn’t even know they wanted!

The Michael Peagram Building proved a wonderful setting for such a great day. Of course, it wouldn’t be a school day without steamed pudding and we weren’t disappointed! Thank you to AROPS for organising such an engaging event and we look forward to watching your online network grow.
